Dear Stranger

Art, Photography

Shizuka Yoyomizo started Strangers in 1999, when she began sending letters to house’s that had downstairs windows that she could easily look into. She asked the residents if they would turn on their lights and pose at the window at a specific time, so that she could photograph them from the outside. Due to the reflective nature of the windows, the inhabitants would be staring at themselves rather than her, allowing her to capture the strangers in not just a voyeuristic manner, but also in a moment of self-contemplation and recognition.
